About Hill Capital

Every company we back has a story. Here’s ours.

How a firm named for a Saint Paul railroad builder came to back owner-led companies across the country — and where we’re headed next.

Our mission

To give owner-led companies the capital to grow and the community to grow well — on terms that keep founders in control of what they’ve built.

Chapter 01 · The name

Named for the Empire Builder

Portrait of James J. Hill

James J. Hill built the Great Northern Railway west from Saint Paul in the late 1800s — largely without the federal land grants other transcontinental lines relied on. He laid track where it could pay its way, and helped grow the farms, towns and customers along the route as he went.

[Why the founders chose the name — one or two sentences in their words.]

Build where it pays

Growth funded by real demand, not hope.

Grow the route

Invest in the people and customers around you.

Own the long game

Builders who stay in control, for the long haul.
